HISTORY

The roof is a mansard roof with dormer windows. The use of the mansard roof became a popular addition and expense to home builders of this period who desired that the community take note of their financial success; thus enabling the family to take their rightful place as a prominent member of the community. It was a means of distinguishing your residence from the other homes and farmhouses in the county.
At this time the area was known as Roopsburg, which consisted of a Mill (owned and operated by the former secretary to Napoleon, which is another story) a school, dance hall, gunsmith and ironworks shop.

The cornerstone of the community was the Roopsburg Brewery and the amazing catacombs, which served as the storage area for the brewery. Fortunately, the catacombs still exist to this day. They continue to stand as a testament to the industrial strength of this small but productive community. The catacombs have been recognized as a valuable historical asset of Centre County - providing a glimpse into the brewing techniques that were developed in this area.

The history of the house just prior to and after the closing of the brewery is colorful—a daughter of the Haas family burned herself alive on the porch of the gunsmith shop due to unrequited love—prohibition brought bootlegging—and eventually the Roopsburg house became a brothel which it is rumored entertained many of the prominent men of the time.

Eventually families purchased the home and grounds. Renovation and restoration have continued over the years. The Roopsburg House and Brewery have been recognized for listing on the State and National Registry of Historic places.

Today the Spring Creek House continues to be a valuable connection to the past and a joy for Pat, Michael and Diana to share with you. Whether you are here for a Penn State Football Game—a day of fishing — a walk in Historic Bellefonte or the beauty of a walk around the three plus acres we hope you enjoy your stay.
